Alumni membership
Graduates from The University of Manchester are eligible to apply for an alumni membership at The University of Manchester Library.
This membership is free and lasts for ten years, after which it can be renewed.
The membership provides access to a wealth of resources and services in Main Library - the largest library site on campus.
Here’s what the alumni membership offers:
1. Access to Main Library study spaces
There are over 2000 study spaces at Main Library that you can use (excluding bookable spaces). You will receive a Library card to access Main Library.
2. Borrowing rights
We hold a wide range of printed books from academic textbooks to everyday fiction. You can borrow up to 15 standard loan books at a time. This excludes our high demand items which are linked to currently running courses. If any material is held in other sites, Library staff can collect these for collection in Main Library.
Standard loan books can be borrowed until the end of the next academic year. Please be aware that all items can be recalled at any time. If this should happen, you will be notified by email and you will have seven days to return the item.
3. On-site online resources
You can use our dedicated ‘public access’ PC on Blue Ground to access a wide range of electronic resources. From scholarly journals to databases, you'll find valuable information at your fingertips. For a list of resources, see:
4. Off-site online resources
To access online resources remotely, Alumni need to complete the registration form on the Your Manchester website:
List of resources

How to sign up
You can apply for graduate membership either in person at the Main Library Customer Service Desk, or you can fill in our application form and send it to us via Library Help.
For most graduates, all we request is that you submit the application form. There are a few exceptions where we need to see some evidence of your status as a graduate:
- Graduates of affiliated courses should bring their degree certificate or old student ID.
- Erasmus students are entitled to the Alumni Membership only if they have completed 12 months or more with The University of Manchester.
- If you graduated before 1996 you will need to provide either:
- A copy of your degree certificate
- Your Alumni Association card
Upon successful completion, you will be issued a Library card that lets you access Main Library. You need this Library card to enter and exit Main Library. Please do not share your Library card with anyone else – it is unique to you.
