Workshops and drop-ins
We provide workshops and drop-ins in the specialist areas of Referencing, Business Data, Advanced searching and Systematic reviews.
Members of staff can request sessions to be delivered within the curriculum by completing this online form.
We can also arrange group sessions for postgraduate students and researchers, tailored to support you and your colleagues. Contact us at uml.teachingandlearning@manchester.ac.uk to discuss options.
Microsoft Certification Assessment
This booking page is for University of Manchester students taking part in the Microsoft Office Specialist Certifications.
We strongly recommend that you complete the relevant learning materials on LinkedIn Learning to prepare for your exam and that you have scored 70% or over in at least 2 practise assessments in Gmetrix for the Microsoft Office Specialist certification you will be taking before the date of your session. A limited number of certifications are available and we cannot guarantee resit opportunities available during the pilot.
Please only book 1 assessment session date/time.The booking for each session will close 48 hours before each exam to allow us to book the exam.
In order for us to ensure the certification you are interested in is available, you must fill out a form. This form will also allow us to support you if you have applied, or are you intending to apply to Certiport, for exam accommodations (https://certiport.pearsonvue.com/Educator-resources/Exam-policies/Accommodations) such as extra time. All assessments will take place on campus in Main Library, Blue 4 Training Suite.

Finance Zone Support (on campus)
Do you have a burning question about business data or how to use business resources? The business data drop-in gives you the opportunity to ask that question and find a solution.
These are quick informal sessions, there's no need to book. They can get busy so you may have to wait a little while, but we'll answer your question as soon as possible.

Beginners' reference management with EndNote online (online)
EndNote online is the web-based version of the EndNote reference management software. Freely available on the Internet, you can register as a University of Manchester user via the Web of Knowledge database to get access to the full functionality of this resource which you can use to keep track of your reading, share your references with others and create citations and bibliographies in the appropriate format and style. This workshop will introduce you to the software and help you to start using this valuable referencing tool.

Searching systematically (on campus)
This searching systematically workshop will introduce you to the four database platforms that house most of the medical and health sciences databases. This session is based on the searching systematically workshop delivered on Campus.
You will be shown how to replicate a search topic in these four database platforms: EBSCO and OVID platforms which host databases such as PsycInfo and CINAHL, and Clarivate and Proquest platforms which host the Web of Science and ASSIA databases.
There will be allotted time for you to practice or ask questions after each of the four demonstrations

Show up and search (on campus)
This event brings researchers together for a fixed amount of time to practice systematically searching the Library's subject databases. It is a dedicated space to develop skills demonstrated in our Searching Systematically workshop (which introduces the four core Medical and Human Sciences database platforms; Ovid, EBSCO, Proquest and Clarivate). There is no formal teaching; use this as an opportunity to reduce distractions and focus on honing your search strategies.
Two members of library staff will be present to welcome you and lend guidance throughout the session. They will also ensure you are aware of the time at key points, to help keep you motivated and on-task. You may ask questions, leave the session, or take a break at any time. There is no expectation to work in silence, though you may do so. We encourage you to connect with the other researchers in the room.

LSEG Refinitiv Workspace (Workspace) is a powerful financial database that provides access to company and economic data, news and much more. In this online workshop, you will learn how to access and navigate Workspace using the search function, apply filters to screen for lists of companies and save them to your watchlists, as well as access further training and support through both LSEG and the Library

Beginners' reference management with EndNote desktop (on campus)
This hands-on session will introduce you to the EndNote reference management software, a tool to help with managing your references and creating citations and bibliographies in different formats. The workshop will help to get you started using EndNote to manage references, annotate the PDFs of articles attached to your reference data and to generate bibliographies in over 5000 different styles.
