SCONUL Access Scheme

The University of Manchester Library participates in the SCONUL Access Scheme.

SCONUL membership allows you to access the library facilities of other higher education institutions who are participating in the scheme. To use the Access Scheme, you must first apply to become a SCONUL member:

Information for University of Manchester students and staff

  • Your SCONUL application must be accepted before you can visit other institutions’ libraries. Your application will be processed by The University of Manchester Library.
  • We are experiencing a high volume of applications for SCONUL memberships. Library staff are processing applications as quickly as possible. It may take up to four weeks to process your application.
  • Some institutions have decided not to take part in the SCONUL scheme at this time. You will be able to see a full list of participating institutions when you apply for membership.
  • Please plan your visits to other libraries carefully. Double check their websites before you travel in case they need to make any sudden changes to access regulations.

Information for visitors from other HE institutions

  • Your institution must be participating in the SCONUL Access Scheme in order for you to be eligible to apply for SCONUL membership.
  • Your SCONUL application must be accepted before you can visit The University of Manchester Library. Your institution will process your application. Your application must be approved before you can visit The University of Manchester Library.
  • If you were a SCONUL member before the scheme had to close in March 2020, you must reapply before visiting us.
  • Due to the ongoing impacts of the pandemic, some institutions have decided not to take part in the SCONUL scheme at this time. You will be able to see a full list of participating institutions when you apply for membership.
