Inclusive description

Library Search functions as the Library catalogue, and is an essential resource for Library users. It facilitates the discovery and access to both physical and online collections, as well as information resources that support teaching, learning and research.

Using Library Search is integral to the Library experience, providing easy access to a vast range of resources, it strives to be inclusive and welcoming for everyone.

We acknowledge the challenges related to language, representation, and inclusivity in some Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) used in the Library catalogue. This is a widespread legacy issue for university libraries, where historical terminology may not reflect current understandings and awareness of racial equity issues.

Inclusive terminology

We aim to determine the extent of language, representation, and inclusivity issues within subject headings in the Library catalogue and identify solutions to create a more inclusive and accessible search and discovery experience.

Inclusive terminology is not about erasure. Original language may be harmful or discriminatory, but we need to accurately maintain the historical record. Inclusive cataloguing is about adding context to enhance records and provide information about why terminology has been changed or retained. This way users can access records associated with historic resource in informed ways

Inclusive cataloguing involves revising descriptions and standardised sets of terms like LCSH by adding more respectful language or creating new standardised terms to describe resources.
