Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
- Some of the website can be operated using only a keyboard, but the focus is not immediately obvious on all pages. (WCAG: 2.4.7)
- It is not possible to use a keyboard on all pages of this web page. This means that some content and functionality is inaccessible to users that rely on a keyboard. (WCAG: 2.1.1)
- Navigation around the website is limited. This approach does not cater for users with different navigation preferences and needs. (WCAG: 2.4.5)
- It is not possible to bypass blocks of content on some pages. This may be difficult for people with some disabilities to reach the main content of a web page quickly and easily. (WCAG: 2.4.1)
- The language of the website is not set. Both assistive technologies and conventional user agents can render text more accurately when the language of the Web page is identified. (WCAG: 3.1.1)
- Some linked images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information (WCAG: 1.1.1).
- Colour contrast may not be sufficient on some webpages which could make these pages difficult to read for some users with visual impairments. (WCAG: 1.4.3).
- Some text within the website is embedded within an image. This presents issues for users that rely on screen reading technology, or those that require the text in a particular font size, foreground and background colour, font family, line spacing or alignment. (WCAG: 1.4.9)
- Some content cannot be presented without loss of information when magnified to the maximum browser level. (WCAG 1.4.10)
- Some image tools (eg. rotate, zoom) are removed from view when the cursor is moved. Tooltips are not always present for all icons and images. This could present issues for some users and interfere with their ability to navigate effectively. (WCAG 1.4.13)

This website contains archival imagery that may not be accessible to all users.
While reproductions of items in heritage collections are exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations we will continue to investigate ways to use emerging technology to improve the accessibility of our heritage collections.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We have an ongoing programme of work to address any accessibility issues that are highlighted by our weekly scans. We are continually working on our content and site structure and finding ways to make the site more intuitive and easier to navigate. We are developing guidelines on how to create accessible content to help those colleagues working on our websites.
