University of Manchester Halls of Residence Archives

The University of Manchester Archives includes collections from the following halls of residence: Dalton Hall, Ellis Llwyd Jones Hall, Hulme Hall, Langdale Hall, St Anselm Hall and St Gabriel's Hall. These are particularly informative for the study of student social life at the University from the 1870s to the present day.

Originally, most of Manchester's student halls were privately owned, often by bodies associated with particular religious denominations. These halls had a strong corporate ethos, and built identities which often copied practices from traditional Oxbridge colleges. From the late 1950s, the University took over control of most halls, and in the 1980s and 1990s, separate halls for men and women were gradually replaced by mixed residence.

The archives of the halls vary in their constituents, but typically they include the records of governing bodies and student hall committees, financial records, estates records, hall registers, buttery records, newsletters and magazines, and records of hall alumni groups.
