Visitor guidelines

Food and drink are not allowed in the Library, only bottled water is permitted.

Please do not leave bags or personal belongings unattended.

Suitcases are not permitted.

Please ensure children are accompanied. 

Photography

Photography is permitted for personal, non-commercial use, unless otherwise stated in the building by staff or signage.

The use of flash, reflectors or tripods is not permitted. 

Please do not obstruct stairways or corridors.

The John Rylands is not a licensed wedding venue.

How to get here

The John Rylands Library is located on Deansgate in the city centre. The entrance is just off Deansgate, in Spinningfields.

Accessibility

Arriving at the Library:

  • Entrance to the Library is through a modern extension to the Historic building
  • The modern extension is fully accessible, with level access.
  • A temporary door and welcome desk is in use down the left side of the modern extension.
  • There are portable folding stools available for use as you explore the Library.

Within the Library

  • There is lift access to all floors with the exception of the Historic entrance and toilets.
  • There are steps with a handrail leading to the Historic entrance and toilets.
  • The corridors are wide with flat stone flags.
  • The Historic building can have lower light levels.
  • There is one accessible toilet in the basement of the modern building. A RADAR key is required to access this facility; a key is available at the welcome desk.
  • Our staff wear purple clothing and can be found in all areas of the Library if you need further assistance.
