George H. Viner Bookplate Collection

Date range: 1860-1912

Medium: Printed

An almost complete collection of bookplates designed by Charles William Sherborn (1831-1912) between 1860 and 1912. The collection was donated to The John Rylands Library in 1950 by George Heath Viner (1864-1955) of Heathfield, East Sussex, an authority on and collector of British bookplates. Viner had a life-long interest in Sherborn and, with the artist’s son Charles, he compiled a catalogue of his bookplate designs.

Sherborn produced around 450 bookplates, mainly armorial, but with some pictorial and some including portraits. The collection includes 1583 plates in various states, including the bookplates designed for The John Rylands Library in 1894 and 1898.
