James Kay-Shuttleworth Papers

Papers mainly relating to Sir James Phillips Kay-Shuttleworth (1804-1877), 1st Baronet, physician, public-health reformer and founder of the English system of public education.

At the core of the archive are some 1,100 letters, representing an extensive body of correspondence with a wide range of politicians, landed gentry, social reformers and educators, as well as family and friends including his son Ughtred James Kay-Shuttleworth, 1st Baron Shuttleworth (1844-1939), and wife Lady Janet Kay-Shuttleworth (1817-72).

Correspondents represented include: John Russell, 1st Earl Russell; William Cavendish, 7th Duke of Devonshire; Matthew Arnold; John Addington Symonds; Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts, Baroness Burdett-Coutts; Charles Trevelyan; W. E. Gladstone; John Bright; W. E. Forster; William Rathbone Greg; and Edward Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby.

There is also printed material relating to poverty and its relief, and social and educational reform, by both Kay-Shuttleworth and others. The archive also includes the manuscripts of Kay-Shuttleworth's autobiography (1877) and an unpublished novel, Cromwell in the North.
