Papers of Tobias Theodores (1808-1886), linguist and Jewish scholar. Theodores was the first teacher of German employed by Owens College, Manchester. From 1861 until his retirement in 1884, he was Professor of European and Oriental Languages at Owens. As well as being an accomplished linguist, Theodores was also a noted scholar of the Talmud, and was an active promoter of Reform Judaism.
The core of this small archive is Theodores' correspondence with Gustav Gottheil, a fellow adherent of Reform Judaism, who moved from Manchester to New York in 1874. The correspondence provides interesting details on the British Jewish community, especially in Manchester. The letters also discuss issues relating to Reform Judaism, and the relations between Jews and Christians in Britain and Germany. The collection also includes Theodores' notebooks concerning his research languages and Judaic theology.
