Date range: 1988-2012

Medium: Archive

Antonio Donini is a former humanitarian worker who worked for the United Nations for 26 years including in research and evaluation. He worked extensively in Afghanistan from the late 1980s onwards, including as the head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Afghanistan.

This collection, which is made up of correspondence, reports, grey literature and publications, primarily covers his work in Afghanistan. This involved resettling IDPs (Internally Displaced People – i.e. people who have fled their homes, but have not left the country), landmine clearance, health programmes, water supply, education and food distribution. The collection shows the working conditions for humanitarians and their relationships to the various political factions in Afghanistan at the time.

The collection also covers Donini’s career in humanitarian evaluation and research into humanitarianism, migration and peace, including at the Feinstein International Centre at Tufts University. His research focussed in particular on the efficacy of humanitarian action and its manipulation.
