Sutherland Collection

Medium: Printed

Number of items: 600 items (dispersed)

John Gordon (1661-1733), 16th Earl of Sutherland, brought together this collection of late 17th- and early 18th-century tracts.

Approximately one third consists of polemical works on the religious issues of the day, including many tracts by well-known divines such as Daniel Featley (1582-1645), Thomas Case, Rector of Stockport (1598-1682) and Edward Stephens (d. 1706).

The major portion reflects the Earl's interest in the affairs of his time, and in particular in the Union of Scotland with England (1707), of which he was an active supporter.
