The Library holds a significant collection of printed items by Elizabeth Gaskell, complementing the outstanding holdings of Gaskell manuscripts.
The collection includes all the comparative scarcities recorded in Michael Sadleir's Excursions in Victorian Bibliography (London: Chaundy & Cox, 1922) , and all of the items for which he gives full bibliographical descriptions, save for the first edition of Elizabeth Gaskell's Lizzie Leigh: A Domestic Tale (New York: Dewitt & Davenport, 1850).
Not recorded by Sadleir, but available in Manchester, are Gaskell's first prose publication, 'Clopton Hall', published in William Howitt's Visits to Remarkable Places: Old Halls, Battle Fields, and Scenes Illustrative of Striking Passages in English History and Poetry (London: Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, & Longmans, 1840), pp. 130-46; the first American edition of My Lady Ludlow: A Novel (New York: Harper, 1858), which predates the first English edition; and the first American edition of Right at Last (New York: Harper & Brothers, 1860). Many of the volumes contain the author's own inscriptions and notes.
A portion of the collection originates from the collection of the Gaskell scholar John Geoffrey Sharps (1936-2006).
