Ancoats Social Survey Archive

Date range: 1937-1938

Medium: Archive

Records of a social survey undertaken by the Manchester University Settlement in the Ancoats district of Manchester in 1937-8. The survey covered the New Ward area of Ancoats, where most residences had been scheduled for demolition. Residents were then moved to new municipal estates in other parts of the city. The Settlement, which was located in the area, set up a Survey Committee to conduct a detailed study of the social conditions of the residents including information about their housing, occupations, income, diet and social activities. Unusually, the survey also recorded the views of residents about the clearance and moving to the new estates.

The archive comprises over 450 detailed survey responses, which provide invaluable information about living conditions in an inner-city district of Manchester in the inter-war period. Originally, it had been planned to extend the survey to the new homes of the former Ancoats residents, but this had to be cancelled on the outbreak of war in 1939. The Survey results were published as Ancoats, a study of a clearance area: a report of a survey made in 1937-8 (Manchester 1945).
