Dr. J. T. Wilkinson (1893-1983) was a Primitive Methodist minister and scholar. He was particularly interested in Richard Baxter (1615-91), a Puritan minister and early Nonconformist. Baxter's works make up the majority of this collection, in 17th century editions, along with works by other Christian thinkers of the time. All but one of the works in this collection are in English and 89 are from the 16th and 17th centuries.
After preaching on the circuit, Dr. Wilkinson was appointed tutor in Church History and English Literature at Hartley Victoria College in 1946 and became Principal in 1953. He published editions of Baxter's works, as well as biographies of the founders of Primitive Methodism.
This collection of books was donated to the Library in 1981 by Dr. Wilkinson's son, Canon Alan Wilkinson.
