Dating mainly from the second-half of the 19th-century, this wide-ranging collection of pamphlets covers political, economic and financial issues. A significant proportion of the collection is contemporaneous with the second (1880-85) and third (1886) ministries of William Ewart Gladstone (1809-98) covering aspects of the Irish Question (particularly land reform and leaseholding).
Other topics include Free Trade; constitutional and electoral reform; the reform of local government; the nationalization of land; Egypt and Suez; imperial expansion and emigration; liberalism, conservatism and socialism; the disestablishment of the Churches, and crime, punishment and the death penalty. Women’s suffrage, spelling and currency reform, Unitarianism, atheism and education are also covered. Many of the pamphlets are printed provincially.
