Teaching and learning materials

Welcome to the teaching and learning materials page for the project Faith in the Town: Lay Religion, Urbanisation and Industrialisation in England, 1740-1830.

Our project looks at what happened to ordinary people living in the North of England during a period of dramatic urban growth, economic change and religious change. We wanted to find out how these upheavals affected the ways people thought about religion and their place in the world, and how faith fit into their daily lives. Find out more about the project here:

These resources are designed for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils, arranged around seven lessons. Each lesson contains background notes and ideas for teachers, and resources for pupils which include images and documents left behind by ordinary people, including children. The themes covered in the resources are broad and flexible, and work with subject areas in RE, History (including local study) and Geography.
