Chris McCully Papers

Chris McCully (1958-) is a British poet and academic, who has published on a wide variety of subjects, including poetry, metrics and translation, the history and structure of the English language, travel and angling. He completed a doctorate at the University of Manchester in 1988, and worked at the University until 2003. He is currently an Honorary Senior Research Fellow of the Faculty of Arts at Manchester, and a Professor in the Literature, Film and Theatre Studies Department at the University of Essex.

Seven of McCully’s volumes of poetry and translation have been published by Carcanet Press, beginning with Time Signatures in 1993 to the most recent, a translation of Beowulf in 2018. In addition to academic papers, McCully has contributed to a variety of journals, including PN Review and Trout and Salmon. McCully was also a Director of the Modern Literary Archives Project at the University of Manchester, advocating for the collection and preservation of material of this genre.

The collection includes draft manuscripts and annotated typescripts relating to the creation of poetry and prose literary works, books on angling, reviews by McCully and of McCully’s work, criticism and scholarly works, and personal and professional correspondence. Correspondents include Michael Schmidt, Grevel Lindop and Anne Stevenson.

Also included are diaries, photographs and records relating to the operation of Manchester Poetry Centre and the Rylands Annual Poetry Reading. There is material relating to the Modern Literary Archives Programme at the University of Manchester, and to McCully’s teaching work. A recent accrual to the collection includes letters written by McCully during his early life at school.
