Papers of Sir Hubert Worthington (1886–1963), architect.
After training with Sir Edwin Lutyens in Rome, and war service with the Manchester Regiment, in 1923 Worthington was appointed Professor of Architecture at the Royal College of Art. He resigned in 1928 to return to the well-known family practice of Thomas Worthington & Son, and in 1929 he took up the Slade lectureship in architecture at Oxford.
Worthington designed numerous buildings in Oxford and restored war damage at Manchester Cathedral, the Inner Temple, London, and Westminster School. He was a vice-president of the Royal Institute of British Architects and president of the Manchester Society of Architects.
The archive comprises:
- Architectural plans of Imperial College, the Inner Temple and elsewhere; photographs of buildings in Cheshire, Lancashire, Oxfordshire and other counties, and photographs of war memorials and gravestones;
- Specifications, estimates and quotations for commissions;
- Minutes and reports relating to commissions;
- Correspondence relating to commissions;
- Fees for architectural work undertaken by Worthington;
- Manuscript lecture notes on the history of architecture;
- Miscellaneous printed matter;
- Items relating to the Worthington family.
The latter include four travel journals detailing Thomas Worthington’s tours through Italy in 1848 and 1858, with shorter accounts of his travels in France, Switzerland and Germany.
