Stuart Linden Rhodes is a British photographer based in North Yorkshire, his collection comprises both a physical and digital element and covers his photojournalism from the 90s to the early 2000's.
The central element of the collection is the Linden archive. This covers the 1990’s when ‘Linden’ was a freelance photojournalist for Gay Times and All Points North magazines, travelling across the North of England and producing columns under the title Out & About with Linden. At the time Rhodes was also a lecturer at a local further education college and had adopted the pseudonym 'Linden' due to concerns generated by Clause 28 legislation, sanctioned by Conservative governments of the era.
The Linden archive provides an authentic narrative of this pivotal period. Mainly shot on 35mm film, it captures the thriving queer club and pub scenes of the towns and cities of the North. Manchester features as one of those developing centres, documenting a time when the Gay Village clubs were at their peak and Flesh night at The Haçienda was a legendary happening.
Across the early 2000's Linden Rhodes photography focus moved to live music, mainly for the Harrogate Advertiser newspaper.
Linden has works in Manchester Art Gallery’s permanent collection and he has exhibited widely, including at the Grundy Art Gallery, Queer Britain, Moray Pride, Vane Gallery and the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum as part of the Museum of Youth Culture. Works in print include OUT & ABOUT WITH LINDEN: A Queer Archive of the North and Linden Archives.
