Rob Gretton was a central figure in the genesis, development and promotion of the Manchester music scene and the city of Manchester from the late 1970’s until his untimely death in 1999. He was the manager of Joy Division and New Order and a partner in Factory Records.

This archive covers the period 1976 – 2004, taking in his early work with Manchester bands The Panik and Slaughter & The Dogs, including artefacts of the UK Punk scene, through to the day to day development, management and growth of Joy Division and New Order and their label Factory Records, of which Gretton was a partner, The Haçienda, Dry and finally his own labels Rob’s Records and Pleasure.

Current Holdings:

The archive contains around 1600 individual items, many of which are unique and unseen including personal correspondence, business letters and invoices, original album and single artwork, promotional materials, posters, acetates, vinyl albums and singles, CD’s, videos, cassettes, books, original photographs and personal items.

The collections is of interest to researchers across various disciplines including music, popular culture, photography, fashion, visual culture and sociology.
