Excavating The Reno Archive

Date range: c. 1980’s

Medium: Archive

Number of items: 500 approximately

The Reno was a late-night cellar club in Moss Side, Manchester, located on the corner of Princess Road and Moss Lane East. Originally opened in 1962 as a live music venue it’s best known for the period between the early 1970’s and mid 1980’s where it played a mix of soul and funk.

The Reno was demolished in 1987.

In 2017 Reno regular and playwright Linda Brogan spearheaded a campaign to excavate the site. Supported by Arts Council England, Manchester City Council and Salford University the site was excavated and materials from the site were saved. This excavated material forms the core of the ‘Excavating The Reno’ archive. Materials include glass drink bottles and tin cans, wallets, dice, make-up, perfume bottles and interior design materials.

The archive also contains paperwork relating to the excavation and further documentation, promotional material, testimonies and artworks relating to an exhibition of the excavated material held at The Whitworth art gallery in Manchester.
