Manchester Classical Association, Excavations Committee Records

Date range: 1905-1964

Medium: Archive

The Manchester branch of the Classical Association was set up in 1904, and in the following year an Excavations Committee was established to pursue archaeological investigations within the region. Archaeology was one of the main interests of the branch's membership. The Excavations Committee undertook important archaeological studies of the Roman forts at Melandra Castle, Derbyshire, Castlefield, Manchester, and Ribchester, Lancashire.

This small archive comprises the minute books of the Committee to 1964, and these include reports, circulars, letters and excavation maps. The archive is significant for the regional development of archaeological practice in Britain.
