Claude Wilson Wardlaw (1901-1985) was Barker Professor of Cryptogamic Botany, 1940-60, and George Harrison Professor of Botany, 1958-66, at the University of Manchester.
Wardlaw was an international authority on diseases of the banana and one of the foremost researchers in the world on plant morphogenesis, the study of plant form. He acted as a consultant on tropical crop diseases to several companies.
Wardlaw's archive consists of reports, correspondence and photographs from study tours and consultancies in the Caribbean, central America, Africa and the Far East. His interest in the cultivation and diseases of bananas and oil palms are well-documented including his work as an adviser to the Standard Fruit and Steamship Company of America. There are also draft and proof copies of his monographs on Diseases of the Banana, Embryogenesis in Plants and Organization and Evolution in Plants, and of articles in the Handbuch der Pflanzenphysiologie.
The collection will be of interest to those interested in plant pathology and mycology, and of the early study of morphogenesis in plants, as well as those with an interest in the relationships between academic advisers and commercial agriculture in the developing world in this period.
