The League of the Good Samaritan was founded in 1910 by Herbert Buckley (d. 1924) at the Oxford Road Wesleyan Methodist Church in Manchester. The League was intended for men aged seventeen and over who were 'prepared to follow the example of the Good Samaritan by showing brotherly kindness and neighbourliness to those in trouble and in need'.
From 1925, lodges affiliated to the League were established throughout England, particularly in the North and Midlands. Most lodges were attached to Methodist churches but some were connected with Anglican, Baptist and Congregational places of worship.
In 1986 there were 30 lodges grouped into five regions, plus a country lodge for members unable to attend a local lodge. In 1969 it was stated that the aim of the League was `to encourage the practical application of good neighbourliness and promote and expand a fellowship of Christian men and women dedicated to further the objects of the League'.
The archive contains minute books, accounts and attendance registers for the Foundation Lodge from 1910 onwards, as well as minutes of the National Executive Committee and correspondence, typescripts and printed ephemera relating to the Lodge at a national level.
