George Mitchell Papers

George Archibald Grant Mitchell (1906-1993) was a physician who made important contributions in two distinct areas: anatomy and the clinical application of new antibiotic drugs.
Mitchell was Professor of Anatomy at the University of Manchester from 1946 to 1973, where he specialised in neuroanatomy and the renal nerves. During the Second World War, he had played a leading role in the innovative use of antibiotic treatments, especially penicillin, for sick and wounded soldiers.
Professor Mitchell's papers deal mostly with his work on penicillin, and include reports, notes, draft articles and correspondence relating to his research on antibiotic treatments while serving with the Middle Eastern Force and the 21 Army Group in western Europe. There are letters from former patients thanking him for his work, letters from Howard Florey and Alexander Fleming about the development of penicillin, and correspondence with his former chief in the 21 Army Group, Sir Arthur Porritt.
