Robert Dunlop (1861-1930) is best-known for his work on the history of Ireland. He was one of the academic historians to bring the methods of modern scholarship to the study of Irish history.

Dunlop was a special lecturer in Irish history at the University of Manchester for many years. He wrote biographies of the Irish statesmen, Henry Grattan and Daniel O'Connell, as well as histories of Ireland in the 16th and 17th centuries. Dunlop was considered to have unparalleled knowledge of the Irish public archives, and his works were noted for scrupulous archival research. Towards the end of his life, he wrote a major study of Irish history, which has remained unpublished.

This collection of Dunlop's papers include draft and unpublished manuscripts as well as some of his research notebooks and a small amount of correspondence. Probably the most significant item is the manuscript of Dunlop's history of Ireland, covering the prehistoric period to the early 20th century, and running to over 900 folios.
