Daniel Johnson
Hymns, Methodism, Slavery, and Abolition in the Long Eighteenth Century
Visiting Early Career Research Fellow 2024 / 2025
Daniel’s project is a study of the use of evangelical hymns in the contexts of slavery and abolition.
About the project
The project aims to examine which hymns were used, how they were received and performed, and how hymns in turn contributed to the abolition movement.
The project examines Methodist archives including letters, journals, hymn books, and pamphlets.
The project shows the power of music and religion – for good or for ill – and the ways they can be used as means of both control and resistance.
