Heron: item from the Collections Gallery at Rylands

Collections Gallery

The gallery features over 40 rare and fascinating items that tell the story of the Library’s unique collections.

The Library was founded by Enriqueta Rylands in memory of her husband John Rylands, who died in 1888. In this gallery, discover how the Library has grown from 1889 to the present day, from its founder's early acquisitions to contemporary collecting.

Explore the world-class collections of the Rylands. See a richly decorated Qur’an manuscript, a beautifully illustrated love story from 16th century South Asia and a Buddhist meditation guide etched onto palm leaves. At the heart of the gallery is James John Audubon's Birds of America, with a life-sized illustration of a Great Blue Heron. You’ll find engravings by Albrecht Dürer, a log book from Jodrell Bank Observatory and a clay tablet showing a plan for a Sumerian temple.
