Purpose and scope of the Christian Brethren Archive

The purpose of the Christian Brethren collection is to preserve materials that document the history of the Brethren movement and make these materials available to researchers and interested parties. The Archive holds these materials in trust for future generations, and therefore they can only be examined in the Special Collections Reading Room of the University of Manchester's Main Library.

The major emphasis of the collection is historical and current information about the Brethren.

The collection houses materials in a variety of formats including, but not limited to:

  • Books
  • Pamphlets
  • Periodicals
  • Photocopies of material in private collections
  • Annotated Bibles
  • Diaries
  • Letters
  • Photographs

The main emphasis is on English language material, material relating to the United Kingdom, and missionary activity originating therefrom. Other languages and countries are represented, but comprehensive coverage is not attempted.

The collection does not house materials in the following formats:

  • Three dimensional artefacts
