Andy Spinoza began his career as a journalist, quickly moving into dual roles as a journalist / publisher. He moved from London to Manchester to study at Manchester University, inspired by the emerging punk and new wave scenes and the creative industries surrounding them. Andy became involved in journalism at The Mancunian student newspaper, a weekly publication for which he would write early articles on local animators Cosgrove Hall, conduct interviews with footballers and develop music reviews. The Mancunian won the NUS/Guardian award for best student paper of 1983, giving Andy and two other students the confidence to set up City Life with a mere £2,500.

City Life was an alternative magazine for people not being catered for by the mainstream Manchester Evening News. Inspired equally by Time Out in London and Private Eye it combined music, politics, social issues and local news together in one tailored publication. Moving on to be the entertainments reporter for the M.E.N, as well as writing articles for The Face and NME, curating exhibitions and producing arts programmes for Granada TV, before developing a career as a PR, setting up the agency SKV in 1998, Andy Spinoza has been at the heart of the arts and creative industries in Manchester for nearly 40 years.

The collection is of interest to researchers across many disciplines, including history, popular culture, music, design and sociology.
