Pete Shelley was co-founder of the band Buzzcocks. Formed in 1976 at the Bolton Institute of Technology with friend Howard Devoto the band became one of the foremost UK names during the punk period of the late 1970’s. Shelley and Devoto were responsible for arranging the Sex Pistols famous show at Manchester’s Lesser Free Trade Hall in June 1976 - a show that is widely regarded as having set, or changed the course of Manchester music from that point onwards.

Buzzcocks made their debut supporting the Sex Pistols at their second Manchester show at the Lesser Free Trade Hall in July 1976. They released their debut EP Spiral Scratch on their own ‘New Hormones’ label in 1977. At the same time Devoto left the band promoting Pete Shelley to front man, singer and main songwriter. The band became one of the key UK punk bands with songs such as Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve) and What Do I Get and the albums Another Music In A Different Kitchen and Love Bites.

Pete Shelley went on to a successful solo career before Buzzcocks reformed in the early 1990’s. Pete Shelley died in 2018.
