David Chadwick Photography Collection

David Chadwick studied photography at the Art School at Manchester Polytechnic from 1972-75 at the same time he worked as an assistant to fashion photographer Roger Alexander. He then worked as an artistic photographer for around eight years, while also lecturing at Blackburn College. In the 1980s he became a staff photographer on the magazine Manchester Flash and made a living from photography for almost 20 years while also playing and coaching tennis.

We have two major photo-stories, Hulme and Manchester Clubs in the 70s and 80s.

  • Hulme, 1970s. Chadwick began photographing around Hulme in his final year Art School and continued for the next few years, documenting the first residents of the Crescents, at the time the largest public housing development in Europe.
  • Manchester Clubs, 1970s and 80s. Images of Manchester’s night scene from the late 1970s and early 1980s. candid shots from some of Manchester’s legendary clubs and what Chadwick summarises simply as “young people looking for love.

”The collection is of interest to researchers across many disciplines, including photography, the history of art, and to those interested in visual culture, popular culture and sociology.
