Sir John E. Neale Book Collection
Date range: 1532-1929
Medium: Printed
Number of items: 125 items.
The library of the Elizabethan historian Sir John Neale (1890–1975) was purchased from his widow and daughter on very favourable terms in 1979-80. Sir John had held the chair of modern history at Manchester from 1925 until 1927, but most of his academic career, from 1927 to 1956, was spent as Astor Professor of English History at University College, London.
The books date mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries. English is predominant, but there are texts in French and Latin. The collection reflects Neale's abiding interest in Elizabeth I. Almost every aspect of her reign is covered, with texts by historians, lawyers and theologians.
The Library also holds some of Neale’s lecture notes.
