John P. Marmion Book Collection

The collection was donated by Canon John P. Marmion (1926-) of the Wirral, a former Cheshire parish priest, and archivist of the Diocese of Shrewsbury. Marmion assembled the books to support the writing of his thesis on "Cornelia Connelly’s Work in Education, 1848-1879" (University of Manchester, 1984). Connelly was foundress of the Holy Child nuns, whose main vocation was the education of girls.

The majority of the collection dates from the 19th and 20th centuries, with a focus on text books for schools and works of self-education. Subjects covered include English, French, Italian and Latin; science; mathematics including arithmetic, geometry and algebra; history; geography; religion and music. There are also grammars, spelling books and dictionaries.
