Children's Printed Collection

Date range: 1760-present

Medium: Printed

Number of items: More than 2,100 items

This diverse collection includes both fiction and non-fiction books aimed at children, plus a range of periodical literature for the young. The majority of the collection dates from the 19th century onwards and emphasises the work of such artists as Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886), Walter Crane (1845-1915) and Kate Greenaway (1846-1901).

The collection incorporates a number of donations and bequests. Items bequeathed by Hugh Hale Bellot (1890-1969) in 1969 have a particular emphasis on boys' adventure stories including a large number of novels by G. A. Henty (1832-1902). There are many examples of the firm of Ernest Nister of Nürnberg, including movable books, and a number of titles from the scarce Dumpy Books for Children series.

Books originating from the collection of Maud Gertrude Satterthwaite (1891-1982) and her family have a bias towards girls' literature. The collection comprises children's books of the period from the 1870s to the 1930s, and includes some notable illustrated works. There is a long run of the periodical Little Folks, printed in London by Cassell in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and a good collection of books by Beatrix Potter (1866-1943), including variant bindings. The collection is rich in inscriptions, emphasising the family's habit of book giving through the generations.

Items donated in 2015 by David Blamires, former Professor of German at The University of Manchester, include numerous editions, translations and imitations of the German children's picture book Der Struwwelpeter (Shockheaded Peter), written by Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894). The collection also contains a wide range of material relating to the legend of Robin Hood.
