Manchester Airport Second Runway Inquiry Archive

Date range: 1976-1997 (bulk 1994-1997)

Medium: Archive

The collection comprises copies of documents submitted to a public inquiry held between June 1994 and March 1995 to consider the planning application for the construction of a second runway at Manchester Airport. Most of the collection was accumulated by the Manchester Airport Joint Action Group, which opposed the runway. Despite vociferous opposition, permission to construct the runway was granted in January 1997.

Documents were presented by Manchester Airport plc and other interested parties, both for and against the runway. These included: Manchester City Council, Cheshire County Council, Manchester Airport Joint Action Group, the Department of Transport, Liverpool Airport, Manchester Airport Environment Network, the National Rivers Authority, the National Trust, and numerous individuals.

Reports and studies contain detailed information on the regional transport infrastructure, actual and forecast traffic flows, pollution, tourism, industrial development and the environmental impact of the proposal. The collection also contains a copy of the Inspector’s final report which summarizes the evidence.
