Rudi Coninx Papers

Date range: 1983-1998

Medium: Archive

Dr Rudi Coninx is a retired humanitarian doctor who has worked extensively in the field since 1983, including in Afghanistan and Bangladesh for Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) and in Thailand for the United Nations Border Relief Operation (UNBRO).

This collection consists of guidelines, articles, notes, correspondence, grey literature and reports, and primarily covers Coninx’ work on the Thai/Cambodian border for UNBRO, where he was a health coordinator for Cambodian people displaced by conflict during the 1980s. This part of the collection covers the programmes set up to support refugees in the camps, particularly those relating to health and nutrition, but also includes publications (such as newsletters) produced by the political factions present in the camps.

This collection also covers Coninx’ work in Afghanistan, first as part of an MSF medical team in the 1980s, and then leading cross border operations for WHO in the 1990s, including his work with mine clearance and health programmes. It also includes some correspondence and reports from an MSF exploratory mission for a medical assistance program in Bangladesh following the 1985 cyclone.
