Chris ‘Judge’ Smith is an English songwriter, composer, performer and author. He was one of the founder members along with Peter Hamill of the progressive rock band Van Der Graaf Generator. Formed while studying at the University of Manchester, Judge Smith was part of the early development of the band including on their first single released in 1968. Following his amicable departure from the band he went on to dorm the band Heebalob and write and record numerous solo albums, stage plays and novels. Continuing to collaborate with Hamill as well as working with other noted artists such as Lene Lovich and the team behind Not the Nine o’ Clock News.
The archive is divided into 26 folders and boxes and runs chronologically as curated by Smith prior to donation to the University of Manchester.
