Mike Pickering is a musician, songwriter, DJ and music industry figure. He worked for Factory Records in Manchester both as an A&R and as part of the team at the Factory owned club The Haçienda. He co-founded the bands Quando Quango with Hillegonda Rietveld and T-COY with Simon Topping before forming M People in 1990, going on to sell 11 million records worldwide.

As a DJ he was integral in the rise of house music in the UK launching the ‘Hot’ night and then ‘Nude’ and ‘Shine’ nights which established the Haçienda as the epicentre of the dance music scene in the UK and changed the direction of the club.

Pickering went on to work in the music industry as A&R working with many notable artists including Calvin Harris.

The archive contains materials covering Mike Pickering’s full career in the music industry, club culture and associated period ephemera, especially relating to his hometown city of Manchester.
