John Davies, (born 1949) is a British landscape photographer known for his long-term documentary projects and detailed analysis of spaces. Notably the industrialisation of spaces, but equally the processes of deindustrialisation, regeneration and social change.

Having grown up in the industrial communities of County Durham and Nottinghamshire. Davies’ portrayals of the collieries, quarries, power stations and mills of the North of England remain among his most iconic images and bringing him to the forefront of the photographic community in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

His photographs have been exhibited across the world including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris and the Royal Academy of Art in London.

Davies has published several photobooks, including A Green and Pleasant Land (1987) and the outstanding work The British Landscape (2006). A Green and Pleasant Land was the first photobook published by noted photobook publisher Dewi Lewis, whilst Lewis was at the Manchester Cornerhouse. The British Landscape accompanied a Deutsche Börse Photography prize-winning exhibition of the same name.

This set of works is a detailed study of Manchester’s textile industry in the 1980s and comprises of::

  • 68 vintage black and white prints
  • 29 new black and white prints
  • 20 new colour prints

The collection is of interest to researchers across many disciplines, including photography, architecture, geography, the history of art; and to those interested in visual culture, popular culture and sociology.
