This collection of predominantly 19th-century plays was formed by (John Ramsay) Allardyce Nicoll (1894-1976), Professor of English Language and Literature at Birmingham University 1945-1961, when he was writing his A History of English Drama, 1660-1900 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1923-46).

Acting editions with full stage directions, plans of settings and notes on costumes, the texts range from burlesque to tragedy. Many were published by leading theatrical publishers including John Cumberland, Thomas Hailes Lacy and Samuel French.

Both major authors and minor farceurs are represented, but John Baldwin Buckstone (1802-1879), Henry James Byron (1835-1884), Joseph Stirling Coyne (1803-1868), John Maddison Morton (1811-1891), Sir Arthur Wing Pinero (1855-1934), Charles Selby (1802?-1863), and Tom Taylor (1817-1880) are among the dramatists for whom a considerable number of items are available.
