The Library holds approximately one thousand two hundred books from the personal library of the Cumbrian poet Norman Nicholson (1914-1987), who spent almost his entire life in the small town of Millom. These are mainly first editions, signed and containing enclosures from the authors, and annotated by Nicholson.

The major strength of the collection is 20th-century poetry. Poets that are well represented include W. H. Auden (1907-1973), T. S. Eliot (1888-1965), Edward Joseph Lister Lowbury (1913-2007), Louis MacNeice (1907-1963), Kathleen Raine (1908-2003), Anne Ridler (1912-2001), Robin Skelton (1925-1997), R. S. Thomas (1913-2000) and Andrew Young (1885-1971). Presses represented include Faber & Faber, Marvell, Carcanet, Bloodaxe, Enitharmon and Keepsake.
