Individuals can access the Library on one occasion on production of a form of photo ID, after which they will be required to apply for external membership.
External membership is available at a cost of £75 inc. VAT per year or £200 inc VAT for three years. Payment can be made in cash or by card at the Customer Services Desk in the Main Library. Alternatively you can pay via the University’s Online Store.
Please note membership of the Library is at the discretion of the University Librarian and Director.
Special Collections access
There is no charge to access and consult the Special Collections held at the Library.
Membership of the Special Collections Reading Rooms is open to everyone over the age of 16.
If you are under 16 please contact us as we may be able to help.
Contact Reader Services to request an appointment to consult the Special Collections or to find out more information.
External membership will allow you to borrow up to four books for a semester (excluding books from the High Demand Collection). All loans are subject to recall at any time.
Due to licensing restrictions, most of the library's electronic resources are only available to current staff and students of the University of Manchester.
External users can access some electronic resources (including e-journals) at the dedicated pcs located near the Customer Services Desk.
Please ensure that when applying for membership you bring appropriate photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport. We also require a recent utility bill from the last 3 months. Failure to bring the appropriate ID may cause a delay in processing your application.
We would encourage all applicants to contact the Customer Services Desk in case there is an alternative method of access available to them.
