Do I have dyslexia?

This workshop will focus on students who think they might have dyslexia or another specific learning difficulty. We will introduce you to strategies and support available at the University of Manchester and go over the process we follow to test for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia. As part of the workshop, we will introduce you to text-to-speech and other assistive software and go over mind-mapping as a way to help with writing assignments. Please arrive at the session at least five minutes early.

Please don't book onto this workshop If you have English as an Additional Language and are studying on a course with the University Language Centre to improve your English skills before starting on another programme of study. Instead, please call the Disability Advisory and Support Service on 0161 275 7512 and book a Quick Query appointment with an advisor.

This session will take place on the online video conferencing app Zoom.

Booking onto the session is essential in order to receive the link to join.

Writing together

Writing together is an event for students to come together and write for a fixed amount of time. It is a great way to carve out dedicated time to write and make progress on your written assessments or dissertations. So, please bring a piece of writing you are currently working on.

Find out what to expect from the event and how to prepare in our post here.

The event is divided between concentrated writing blocks and scheduled breaks using the Pomodoro Technique to help keep you motivated and on-task. Breaks will be an opportunity to come together to reflect on and discuss some of the challenges we all face as writers at university. Our friendly advisers and Student Team will also be available to share advice and useful strategies.

Critical analysis a practical approach

Thu 14 Oct 2021, 14:00 - 16:00 BST (GMT+1)

In this session you will use a model for critical analysis to inform your critical thinking and support your analysing of new information. The model will move you from observing a source to connecting it to your own knowledge, and guide you in critically examining the new knowledge in the context of what you already understand. We will have some examples to use on the day, but you are certainly welcome to bring a chapter, image or other item from within your own subject to practice with.
