Reducing the stress of perfectionism

Perfectionism has a way of robbing us of that glow of achievement and ultimately making us miserable. Having high standards is good but not if they make everything in life so challenging that we are exhausted before we have even started!

If you find that you are never really satisfied with your achievements, spend a lot of time procrastinating rather than working and are increasingly self-critical, then this could be the workshop for you.

Mindfulness for concentration

If you are finding it hard to concentrate, have racing thoughts or often feel anxious or overwhelmed then this Zoom workshop, run by The University of Manchester Counselling and Mental Health Service, will introduce you to simple techniques to learn about the nature of the mind and what we can do to alleviate stress.

Currently we may be feeling more anxious and uncertain so may benefit from taking some time to focus on what is within our control. Mindfulness practice is a type of meditation which teaches you how to focus your attention towards what is happening in the present moment. This technique has been proven to be very effective in acceptance and management of stress and anxiety as well as coping with pain and illness.

Challenging unhelpful thinking habits

We can all fall into unhelpful thinking habits, and when our way of life has changed so much since lockdown, unhelpful thinking habits can make things even worse.

This workshop is suitable for anybody who feels stuck or held back by their patterns of thinking. The aims and objectives are to:

  • Develop a basic understanding of the interplay between thoughts, feelings and behaviour.
  • Recognise how some patterns of thinking are unhelpful and lead to emotions and actions that are not in our best interests.
  • Identify what your unhelpful thinking habits are.
  • Consider alternative more helpful responses and how to practice these.

Managing academic pressure

Mon 1 Nov 2021, 13:00 - 14:00 GMT

Almost everyone feels nervous when deadlines approach. Worrying thoughts and the feeling of being overwhelmed at times are probably familiar to most of us. In fact, a certain amount of nervous tension helps us perform to the best of our ability, producing a rush of stress hormones that makes us alert and focused.

However, too much anxiety can block thoughts, create a negative frame of mind, and lead to panic, procrastination, avoidance and poor performance.

These one-off workshops give practical suggestions about how to manage anxiety and will include some simple relaxation techniques to help you stay calm under pressure.

Managing procrastination

We all procrastinate to some extent. It may even be necessary to let things percolate in the mind before putting pen to paper or finger to keyboard. But when you find that you simply cant get down to work yet dream of handing in the perfect piece of work, that nagging guilt spoils your leisure time, that you are becoming increasingly self-critical about your abilities, then its probably time to tackle your procrastination.

We will seek to understand the causes of procrastination and look at practical ways to overcome it.

Writing together

Fri 5 Nov 2021, 11:00 - 13:00 GMT

Writing together is an event for students to come together and write for a fixed amount of time. It is a great way to carve out dedicated time to write and make progress on your written assessments or dissertations. So, please bring a piece of writing you are currently working on.

Find out what to expect from the event and how to prepare in our post here.

The event is divided between concentrated writing blocks and scheduled breaks using the Pomodoro Technique to help keep you motivated and on-task. Breaks will be an opportunity to come together to reflect on and discuss some of the challenges we all face as writers at university. Our friendly advisers and Student Team will also be available to share advice and useful strategies.
