Workshops and drop-ins

We provide workshops and drop-ins in the specialist areas of Referencing, Advanced searching and Systematic reviews.

Members of staff can request sessions to be delivered within the curriculum by completing this online form

We can also arrange group sessions for postgraduate students and researchers, tailored to support you and your colleagues. Contact us at uml.teachingandlearning@manchester.ac.uk to discuss options.

Code Club Workshop

Want to learn to code? Got a question about something you're already working on? Just need somewhere to chat or work on your code? Then come to code club.

Register for this workshop and we'll send you the zoom link. You can drop in to ask a question or just have a chat. No pressure! Our facilitators will be around to help if you need them. Have a look at this blog post for more information.

Referencing support drop-in. Online

Do you have a question about how to reference, or how best to use reference management software such as EndNote or Mendeley? Our online Referencing drop-in gives you the opportunity to speak to one of our Library experts to get support and guidance.

Drop-ins are open to all University of Manchester students, researchers and staff. In peak times you may need to wait, support and advice will be provided as quickly as possible. You can join the drop-in at any time during the session!

Booking on

Booking onto the event is essential to receive the link and passcode to join. This event will take place on the online video conferencing app Zoom. All University of Manchester students and staff should register at Zoom using their University of Manchester email address, only authenticated users can join this event.

Beginners' reference management with EndNote desktop

This hands-on session will introduce you to the EndNote reference management software, a tool to help with managing your references and creating citations and bibliographies in different formats. The workshop will help to get you started using EndNote to manage references, annotate the PDFs of articles attached to your reference data and to generate bibliographies in over 5000 different styles.

Beginners' reference management using EndNote web

EndNote online is the web-based version of the EndNote reference management software. Freely available on the Internet, you can register as a University of Manchester user via the Web of Knowledge database to get access to the full functionality of this resource which you can use to keep track of your reading, share your references with others and create citations and bibliographies in the appropriate format and style. This workshop will introduce you to the software and help you to start using this valuable referencing tool.

Searching systematically. On-campus

Do you struggle replicating a search in a different database? This session will show participants how to replicate a search in four database platforms. This session will raise awareness of some of the search tools useful in replicating searches. Additional support for replicating searches can be found on the Systematic Review Libguide, and the My Learning Essentials - Getting Results: Guides to Searching Databases guide.

This session will run for 90 minutes and there will be 30 minutes at the end for further questions.
