Download instructions for DawsonEra

General instructions

Please check that you are running Digital Editions 4.5.x and to upgrade the software if you are running an older version to ensure the best user experience possible.

Ensure that all instances of Digital Editions (desktop & mobile applications) are running version 4.5.x and that the latest version of the software should always be upgraded as soon as it becomes available.

The download icon is located towards the bottom of the page to which you are first taken

Alternatively, if you click ‘Read online’ the download icon is in the main toolbar, towards the right-hand side

To download a full book you must complete 4 steps:

1. Select how long you want the title

2. If prompted, choose the programme you would like to open the file in (e.g. Adobe Digital Editions, BlueFire Reader). DawsonEra will automatically detect which operating system you are using.

3. Click the download button and wait for the item to download. A notification will appear confirming that the download is in progress and confirming the length of time for which the title will be available,  once downloaded.

4. Once the download is complete, save the file to your device

Software required:

Different software is required, depending on the device you are using, the eReader you choose to view the file and the format of the file that you are downloading. We recommend that you install and authorise this software before you start to download any titles.

 

Instructions for Mac, PC and laptop

Installing and authorising software

Rather than using a public computer, you should download your book to your own computer.

You will be given the option to download the item to Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader; neither Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions nor Bluefire Reader is available on student desktops. ADE is available only on postgraduate students and staff desktop pcs via Software Centre.

Please ensure that you have Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader installed and authorised on your device to continue downloading documents after this date.

To view files using Kortext you must create a Kortext account. You can do this once you have installed it on your device.

To view files using Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader you must install  these products and authorise them with an Adobe ID.

If you have not previously used Adobe Digital Editions on your PC you will be asked to authorise the device you are using,

simply enter your Adobe ID and Password and click ‘Authorize’

 

You will see a confirmation screen once your device has been successfully authorised.

 

 

Downloading titles

If you choose to use Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader

Please ensure that you have installed and authorised this software, as instructed above.

Once you have selected your title and chosen your download period (if this option is available), you will be prompted to select your eReader.

 

You then need to click the  button again, at which point a progress screen will appear:

If you don’t have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your device, you will need to install it and authorise it at this stage.

The file will open as an ACSM File which can be opened and saved to your PC/laptop and then read using  Adobe Digital Editions

If the file doesn’t open automatically, click the URLLink.acsm box on the bottom left of your screen and select ‘open’ from the options

For Kortext you will be prompted to open the .acsm file, select "open with" and select "other" from the drop down menu. Once the new pop-up opens, select Kortext from the menu.

You will be given the option to download the item to Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader

Downloading titles

Once you have selected your title, click the Download DawsonEra icon 1‌ icon twice. 

Choose how long you want to download the item for (if this option is available)

Select the Reader you wish to view the item

Click ‘Download’. A ‘Download in progress …’ screen will appear, telling you how long you will have the title for.


For files in PDF format

You will be alerted to install and authorise either Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions or Bluefire Reader.

Please click “For iPhone and iPad users click here to download” as the file will not download automatically.

 

 

Once the download is complete select 'Open in..' the reader selected or 'More...' to select a different one.

 

A statement about DRM will appear in the app. Click open to read the e-book.

 

For files in ePUB format - and all content

For ePUB files, a URLLink.ascm will appear within your browser. You can choose the app to open the title in. Select "copy to Kortext." or click on ‘Open in Bluefire Reader’ to complete the download.

The title will download and the Bluefire Reader or Kortext app will open – be patient as this might take a few seconds to complete.

The e-book will show in the Library section of the Bluefire reader app with the option to “Read Now” or to “Read Later”

When you click the Dawsonera download button on your android device, you'll be presented with the option to download the title to Kortext, Adobe Digital Editions or BlueFire Reader.

 

Installing and authorising software

Download limits

In most cases, you can download the whole book.

If you wish to download the whole book, the download period available will feature in the drop down options that you are given. This  will depend upon the e-book licence associated with the book:

Licence type                                      Download allowance

Credit based licence:                                          1,2,3,4,5 days

Single/multi-user licence:                                   6 hours
