To complement the Library's collection of correspondence of the French novelist, dramatist and poet Victor Marie Hugo (1802-1885), there are more than one thousand editions of works by or about Hugo. These include first editions of Les Misérables (Brussels: A Lacroix Verboeckhoven & Ce, 1862) and William Shakespeare (Paris: Librairie Internationale; Brussels: A Lacroix Verboeckhoven & Ce, 1864), and a copy of Hans of Iceland (London: J. Robins, 1825), an English translation of Hugo's first published novel, with illustrations by George Cruikshank (1792-1878).
