Collection of books relating primarily to the Irish poet and novelist Katharine Tynan (1859–1931), and to her husband Henry Albert Hinkson (1865–1919) and daughter Pamela Hinkson (1900-1982), who was also a novelist. The collection was donated to the Library in 1986 by the Rev. Canon A. T. Hanson and the Rt Rev. R. P. C. Hanson, who were the literary executors of Pamela Hinkson. The books were those in the possession of Pamela Hinkson at the time of her death. However subsequent additions have been made, including works by Tynan and general volumes on Irish history.
Katharine Tynan published over one hundred novels, collections of poems and five volumes of autobiography. She is best known nowadays as a member of the group of poets that clustered around W. B. Yeats (1865-1939) in the early days of the Irish literary revival of the late 19th century. George William Russell (1867-1935), who wrote under the pseudonym ‘A. E.’, once described her as ‘the earliest singer in that awakening of our imagination which has been spoken of as the Irish Renaissance’ (Katharine Tynan, Collected Poems (London: Macmillan, 1930), p. vii). Tynan's Catholic faith and interest in feminism were also reflected in her work.
The collection contains the majority of published works by the three writers, including contributions to anthologies and periodicals. There are also many presentation books from literary friends.
